MISSION COMMITTEE SUMMARY FALL 2014
As our society is beset with the perpetual threat of international terrorism and the promise of prolonged economic distress, it is little wonder that our thoughts often turn to our veterans, who again are bearing many of the enormous burdens that are required for the defense of democracy at home and abroad. Accordingly, the mission committee is undertaking a major undertaking to honor their service and sacrifice by organizing a Veteran’s Initiative Program (VIP). It will work simply and directly, and best of all, will involve the input and participation of everyone at Holy Trinity. Between the present time and early November, the parish will be sponsoring the collection of hygiene items, gently and/or new clothing and assorted reading material, which will be delivered to residents of the Veterans Administration Hospital and Medical Center in Northport, N.Y. The donated items will be organized into gift packages or baskets that will then be delivered to our friends and neighbors at the center. Please watch the weekly bulletin for an upcoming announcement for the date and location of the organizing session at the parish hall.
In the meantime, the Mission Committee is excited to announce the return of Supermarket Bingo, our traditional benefit function designed to supply and support the Valley Stream Village Food Pantry. It will take place at the parish hall on Saturday, October 11 at 7 p.m., with a $5.00 admission fee with a nominal charge for extra cards. Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. Prospective participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items, which serve the dual purpose of guest prizes and as inventory for the food pantry itself, which is located as part of the outreach office of Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church, located at 55 East Jamaica Avenue here in Valley Stream.
Not to be forgotten is the upcoming Silent Auction, which will also take place at the parish hall on Saturday, November 8th starting at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served , and the event is designed to benefit the general operating fund of Holy Trinity, as we continue to pursue both new and established mission projects over the course of the upcoming year. A $15.00 donation will cover the first set of 7 tickets, and extra tickets are also available for purchase.
